Because the UK per se stayed out of the US Civil War and the US would owe nothing to the UK per se. The US federal income tax started in the US Civil War to pay for the massive expenses therefrom, not to pay any debt (except that debts were incurred in paying the massive expenses).

Groups of Patriots did not support Parliament’s new laws and began to protest. The Sons of Liberty was a network of secret organizations formed to protest the Stamp Act. They began in New York and Massachusetts and then spread to other colonies. Samuel Adams was a leader in the Massachusetts group.
